Climb Tampa Race A Success!

Posted by b4andafter - 25/03/09 at 04:03 pm

Bank of American Building, Downtown Tampa FL
42 Flights / 914 Steps

I trained for the Climb Tampa event over 5 weeks and I’m happy to report that it worked. I completed the climb in 10 minutes and 12 seconds, remained injury free and was not sore the following day! I was 30th in my age group which consisted of 96 female climbers. The fastest woman in my age group (18-29) finished in 7 minutes and 17 seconds! The fastest woman overall finished in 7 minutes and 13 seconds… so I’ve got a lot of training to do if I want to get into the 7 minute realm!

I started the climb out a bit too fast (my adrenaline kicked in)… but I slowed myself down and kept a steady pace throughout the climb. I was the first climber to start in my group, so I was passed by 3 or 4 climbers, but I also passed a good 5 or 6 of the lagging climbers from the group that started ahead of my group.

I took four steps at a time on some of the levels, two at a time on others and towards the top of the stairwell, one at a time. I used the handrails the whole way up. My biggest goal was to keep moving, because I passed quite a few people who were stopped in the stairwell bent over with their hands on their knees.

At one point I passed up 2 or maybe three firemen in full fire fighting uniforms! They were carrying at least 60 extra pounds in equipment and taking the steps one at a time. Seeing them push on gave me an even bigger push to complete the climb as quick as possible.

Overall, I really enjoyed training and competing in the Climb Tampa event. It was a good cause (for which I raised $250), the perfect training goal and a lot of fun… I look forward to competing next year and improving my time!

2.Sydney Opera House, Australia 28 flights (425 steps)
3. Clifton Suspension Bridge, England 33 flights (490 steps)
4. Big Ben, England 42 flights (632 steps)
6. BT Tower, Birmingham, England 66 flights (997 steps)

Stair Training – 914 Steps [Overall 5,190]

Posted by b4andafter - 15/03/09 at 07:03 am

Today’s climb was amazing! My new climbing technique where I use my arms and climb four steps at a time has really improved my time. G actually joined me this morning and I warned him that he might not want to jump in for the whole 914 steps up and 914 steps down… but he decided he wanted to go all the way. I hope he’s not sore tomorrow.

I completed the 914 steps up and 914 steps down in 18 minutes. I figure I’ll cut my time drastically during the race since I’ll only be timed on the ascent. Last year the fastest overall time was 5 minutes and 11 seconds! I don’t expect to finish that quickly. The fastest female finish in my age group was 7 minutes and 57 seconds. I don’t think I have a chance at touching that time either!

My goal is to complete the climb in less than 13 minutes. I’m confident I can reach my goal as I have 5 days left to train and I’m feeling good as race day approaches!

So far I’ve reached these virtual heights:
1. Millennium Dome, England 21 flights (320 steps)
2.Sydney Opera House, Australia 28 flights (425 steps)
3. Clifton Suspension Bridge, England 33 flights (490 steps)
4. Big Ben, England 42 flights (632 steps)
6. BT Tower, Birmingham, England 66 flights (997 steps)
7. Blackpool Tower, England 69 flights (1,036 steps)
8. Seattle Space Needle, USA 78 flights (1,164 steps)

I now have 882 steps left until I reach the top of my next goal:

9. Canary Wharf Tower, England 107 flights (1,600 steps)
